The Sidama Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union (SCFCU) was founded in 2001 to represent coffee producing cooperatives located throughout the Sidama Zone of Southern Ethiopia. Currently, the SCFCU has grown to represent 47 cooperatives and about 80,000 farmers making the SCFCU the second largest coffee producing cooperative union in Ethiopia.
The Nura Korate Cooperative is located in the Dara district of the Sidamo zone, at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level. Nura Korate carries out activities that often go unnoticed but are crucial for small producers, including training producers in best organic practices and investing in basic infrastructure needs like road improvements and establishing local warehouses. SCFCU focuses on establishing a certification process for local cooperatives, creating micro-credit for producers and investing in social programs on a larger scale. Environmental training programs, healthcare initiatives, life insurance, and educational opportunities are just some of the ways SCFCU strives to improve the quality of life for coffee producers and their families.
We have found this coffee to exhibit sweet citrus and strong floral notes, and because of the consistently excellent cup, we try to source coffees from this specific region each year.
We roast on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and to ensure the best tasting coffees, orders received after Monday may not be processed or shipped until the following week.
