This coffee is sourced from JNP Coffee, which was founded in 2012 by native Burundian Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian. Jeanine also founded the nonprofit Burundi Friends International, which has supported women coffee farmers since 2013 in Burundi, one of the world’s poorest countries. Increasing her capacity for social impact, Jeanine is also a current shareholder in multiple washing stations, six of which process women’s coffees in Burundi. Each washing station processing women’s coffee has a capacity of up to four containers per harvest. Both producer and trader, JNP Coffee supports women farmers through the initial purchase of their cherries, and then premium payments for their excellent quality. She collaborates with the IWCA Burundi Chapter, a nonprofit organization of women and men in the coffee industry who work together to empower women in the international coffee community to achieve meaningful and sustainable lives, and to encourage and recognize the participation of women in all aspects of the coffee industry.

Mahonda is an exceptional coffee that comes from a very high elevation washing station. Recognized as a Cup of Excellence winner every year, including a Presidential Award in 2012, this coffee benefits from the attention. A group of about 40 farmers from this area produced this lot. They utilize many of the industry’s best practices, thanks to the support that their award premium payments provide. This is one of the last washing stations to open in the area, because at this elevation, while flowering happens at the same time as other trees in the central region, cherries take longer to mature. That extra time generates more complex sugars, bringing a natural sweetness to the coffee. Cooler weather also means a longer fermentation period of 16 to 18 hours rather than the standard 12 to 14 hours of others. The washing station recently installed a clean tap water system.
