The Caturra variety originated from a spontaneous mutation of the Borbón tree, observed for the first time in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Known for its short trees, Caturra first arrived in Colombia in 1952, and began to spread more widely throughout the country in the 1970s. Today, it is quite hard to come across, but can be found in southern Colombia. Pergamino Coffee Exporters started producing coffee more than 30 years ago in the mountains of Santa Barbara, Antioquia. They now work hand in hand with more than 600 allied farmers across Colombia.

Pergamino always works in small lots, with direct traceability back to a coffee’s origin. They select beans of the highest physical and sensorial quality. They are constantly optimizing the craft — "as intuitive and delicate as it is rigorous" — so that they can bring you a truly incredible cup of coffee.

Through their Elite Producer Program, the premiums they pay for coffees range from 30% to 300% over market prices, depending on the cupping score and volume of the coffee. They also support partnering farmers with technical assistance so that they can continue to improve crop quality. Their goal is for farmers and their families to see coffee cultivation as a profitable, decent business, and not just a way to survive, "the average age of the Colombian coffee farmer is 55 years old — if we do not make it profitable and worthwhile for the next generations of growers to stay on their farms, we will lose this great tradition in one or two generations."

We roast on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and to ensure the best tasting coffees, orders received after Monday may not be processed or shipped until the following week.
